Stephen Jones , National Secretary Australian Community and Public Service Union. The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) is calling on the Federal Government to immediately fix wage differences across the public service in Australia.

According to CPSU national secretary Stephen Jones, the union has found the public service is now a collection of 90 agencies, employing workers on more than 750 different rates of pay. It found large pay differences between the agencies, amounting to tens of thousands of dollars for people doing the same job. According to the data, employees at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies are paid the worst. CPSU national secretary Stephen Jones says women at smaller departments are also paid less than women in larger agencies. “If you’re a woman working in the public service you’re better off working in an agency where the majority of employees are men and you’re better off working in a larger agency because it seems to dictate the pay levels,” he said. “It’s not about work value it’s about the size of the agency and whether your agency has the capacity to pay fair wage increases or not.” Mr Jones says a national pay agreement must be implemented across the entire public service. “And looking at fixing up some of those pay disparities between agencies because if they don’t, they’re just going to embed rigidities which make it very difficult for the Government to change agencies around and deliver flexible programs as well,” he said. The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) had taken massive campaign for defeating Howard Government and bringing Rudd Labour Government to the power. Now it has started campaigning for “Agenda for Change” on ten clearly defined areas such as funding quality public service, open and transparent government, democratic workplaces and fair industrial relations, closing the pay gaps, attraction and retention of workers, indigenous employment, work/life balance, protecting people at work, an education revolution at work and environmental sustainability.
